A trip to see a favorite writer takes a very bad detour- therapy isnt working- a lunar ménage à trois- the regression room- a logical fallacy generator- philosopher after philosopher after philosopher- psychedelic digressions- dotty conversation- really aggressive passive-aggression- having compassion for our illnesses- and much more! You never know whats going to happen on any page of The Girls. I mean, you really dont know whats going to happen. The author is kind of stupid, frankly, and I wish Id never read it. But I did. Okay. So hes got this idea of writing twelve of these things, these little stabs at the alphabet, and each one takes up a different topic or something, I dont know, it all seems weird to me. I mean, if you like weird books, this is a book for you. But only if you like weird books. Theres lots of nostalgia in there. Its like he wants to write some kind of private junk fiction for people who like old sci-fi movies and porn, but also have a shelf full of books on philosophy, and system theory, and whatever other dumb thing finds its way in here, I mean its kind of like a junk drawer, you pull a handle and some crazy character shows up, talking about their losses, talking about the things that obsess them, and yeah I guess some of its funny, but not in a lasting way. I mean you dont really laugh. You dont make the actual sound of laughing. You kind of grunt to yourself. Which isnt really wrong, its fine. Make any sound you want. But you only make that little sound, it isnt a laugh, its not life-affirming. Its like you kind of pass a judgment on life. So its a judgmental grunt. You get it. Anyway Im not really sure what I was saying. Read this thing if youre weird. Tad Viéville
